Atayan attended Civil Engineering College in Armenia but also spent as much of his free time as possible there in the woodworking shop on campus because he loves to do it so much. He met and married his wife in 1997 and moved here to America in 1998.

Eduard Atayan is an Armenian-born master woodworker and chainsaw carver currently based in Lansing, New York. He is widely recognized for his ability to transform massive logs and tree stumps into detailed wildlife sculptures, particularly bears and eagles.

Background and Expertise

  • Early Education: Atayan began learning his craft at age 12 in Armenia and attended art school at 14, where he specialized in traditional chisel carving.

  • Relocation: He moved to the United States in 1998 and initially continued working with hand tools before transitioning to chainsaw wood carving around 2005 to create larger-scale works more efficiently.

  • Prestigious Projects: His classical training is evidenced by his contribution of Gothic panels for the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.

Artistic Style and Noteworthy Work

Atayan’s work ranges from delicate custom pieces to massive outdoor landmarks:

  • Wildlife Sculptures: He frequently carves 8-foot bears and large eagles with high levels of detail, often working out of a location on Peruville Road in Groton.

  • Custom Commissions: He is known for creating specialized items such as custom gunstocks, jewelry boxes, and decorative wall plaques.

  • Competitions: He regularly participates in high-profile carving events, such as the Chainsaw Rendezvous and the Woodsmen Show in Pennsylvania, where he competes in "quick carve" contests.

He maintains an online presence through his Facebook, Instagram and this official website, where he showcases his latest animal carvings and sculptures.
